Is My iPhone Charging Port Dirty or Damaged?

When an iPhone stops charging properly, the cause is often pocket debris packed into the port, but it can also be a damaged connector, a worn cable, the battery or the charging circuit. These signs help you describe the problem. They don't confirm a diagnosis.

Signs That Often Point to Debris

• The cable doesn't click in fully or sits slightly out of the port.
• You can see lint or grit when you look into the port with a light.
• The problem came on gradually rather than after a drop.

Signs That Often Point to Port Damage

• The cable feels loose or falls out even though the port looks clean.
• The phone only charges when the cable is held at an angle.
• Charging cuts in and out when the cable moves.
• The problem started after a drop or after the cable was pulled out sideways.

When It May Not Be the Port

If wireless charging works but no cable works, the wired port or its connection is a likely suspect. If neither wireless nor wired charging works, or the phone shuts down with charge remaining, the battery or board may be involved and repair diagnostics is the better starting point. Always try a second cable and charger you know works.

What Not to Do

Don't put pins, needles, paper clips, knives or any metal or sharp object into the port, and don't spray liquids into it. These can bend pins, scratch contacts or cause a short. If you suspect debris, bring the phone in and we'll inspect and clean it safely.
